Car Spotting: Robs Mk2
The Mk2 Golf has always been a true favourite amongst car lovers, in the last few years they have become quite scarce site and even quite a few that are left are either a mint GTI something in between or a standard clean example. Rob decided to build this MK2 on a budget, attending college and trying to build any sort of car is definitely not an easy task. Truth being his budget was pretty limited but that didn’t stop him from using his head and turning out an awesome result.
The good thing about this Golf is the fact everything is subtle and each mod has been done right to create an individual look for the Golf. Check the back strut which actually hasn’t been covered in that very lame vinyl wrap, if you’re going to sticker bomb do it the right way, no cutting corners. It seems to be a trend that can work well when done right. The back seats and interior has been stripped out whilst the front standard seats have been replaced by a pair of Subaru buckets.
Rob decided to fork out to get the MK2 looking fresh and got the car resprayed in Alpine white and made the purchase of a set of 13 x 8 j Weller steelies which can never really look bad. The steelies came in all black and were sanded back and sprayed baby blue with a raw lip.
Some trusty Nankangs were the tire of choice to achieve a meaty stretch onto the 8j rim. A 165/55 was the profile selected and this car looks like a slammed little go cart driving around. It’s amazing how a set of wheels can completely change the entire look of a car. The front was freshened up with a set of crystal crosshair lights which really suit the overall look of the car.
Achieving the low stance the Golf is sat on a set of Jom’s coilovers. Robs Golf is such a great example of how a set of wheels and the right drop can work wonders almost every time. It’s that good old secret recipe that you see working. To finish off the exterior, Rob decided to go for the big bumpers to try something different.
A few more stickers on the rear again done right can never really fail to add character. Rob dropped in a 1.3 4 speed engine with low mileage to combat fuel prices whilst he gets from A to B to college and back rubbing pretty much everywhere he goes!
There should be no hate towards this clean little MK2, there is many more plans for the car but its doing quite well at the minute. In the future the engine bay will receive a proper makeover as well as most of the rest of the car but you would be very surprised how much attention this little Golf receives as it is already. It almost has that toy or Hotwheels car like appearance. In Ireland, cars like the MK2 and similar have been slowly fading away over the years as people made way for a newer more “interesting” vehicle. Its a real shame as the older cars of the 80’s have much more character and with a few subtle changes can look even better.
