White Noise: An Angry 500 BHP RX7
I originally shot this FD back in 2013 before moving to Canada; it hasn’t hanged much since then visually, and that’s a good thing. I’ve always loved the look of this car, and PJ shares the same opinion. He has retained its original style, only tweaking the aesthetics slightly to make it more usable.
Many would have ditched the striking Ab Flug wheels and Origin GT rear Wing, but these are items that we loved the most about the cars overall look.
When we shot this in 2019, PJ had the car six years, a guy in his local village had an FD when he was younger, and it left an imprint on his more youthful mind. He promised himself that someday he would own one of these brap machines. He made his dreams a reality in 2013, purchasing this beauty during the height of the recession.
The car had initially been running the factory twin-turbo running pushed to about 379HP. Still, over the last couple of years, PJ ripped out the engine and gave it a full overhaul with shadow rotary just outside of Dublin.
With a single turbo conversion and a twin-plate clutch, it’s now running over 500 HP and sounds ruthless! He’s still running more or less the original engine; the car has been surprisingly reliable as the Rotary gets a bit of a bad rep here in Ireland. A lot of people are afraid of these engines here.
PJ told us that the only reason he took the engine out was to go bigger! You don’t see too many RX7’s in the wild, so it’s always a treat to encounter one. Its arguably one of the best designs to come out of Japan, and any chance to shoot one and admire one is the stuff of dreams.
Pj got custom mounts made for the Origin wing as he couldn’t see through the rear window, there are custom rotary shapes in the design, and both the rear canard and the wing mounts are finished in a glitter lacquer.
Not much has changed on the outside since the shoot in 2013. PJ picked up Ganador mirrors before prices spiralled out of control, complemented by a Scoot hood. It looks like an aggressive car without taking from the overall lines of an FD. The car still looks quite simple, which always works in favour of the FD’s shape.
PJ didn’t want to stray from OEM styling, so he decided to fit a facelift front lip; it’s one of the coolest factory front splitters I have ever seen and gives the front a slight bit of toughness.
The Ab Flug Gran – Revolve Prism wheels are a unique design and give the car a superior 90s look. There is a lot of these lesser-known wheels from Japans golden era that usually get overlooked. I’m delighted that PJ, much to the disapproval of others, has kept them on six years later. I’ve never seen another set in real life.
Inside, the car still has the same Recaro’s, a Nardi for steering, Power FC and commander and a Ddefi link controller and gauges. Its a sorted cockpit. I love how the FD cockpit wraps around the driver; it feels like a supercar inside.
The 13B is a busy engine; PJ has created a work of art. A massive anodised single Turbonetics turbo is one of the first items to catch your attention, followed by stainless pipes leading to a front mount, along with Greddy Pulleys and a Koyo radiator. It’s a nice place to rest your eyes.
What more can be said. It was an absolute treat to shoot this thing in the rolling hills of Wicklow; I hope you’ve enjoyed these photos from the last Video, along with some extra words and a proper spec.
Pj’s RX7 is a great looking car that deserves to be appreciated by others; it’s a classic example of what’s hidden away in the Irish countryside.
Cheers for stopping by.
