Photos Unboxed: Fast Fords at Bolands.
I love the other side of the Irish car culture, the lads that came before us, before the influx of Japanese cars on the Emerald Isle.
I always try to make sure I make my way to New Ross every July to check out Bolands Ford gathering. Long before the black hole of Japanese cars, I was obsessed with Sierra and Escort Cosworths; these cars will always have a special place in my heart.
Growing up and with an overwhelming fondness for cars, Rally cars fascinate me, and the first legendary cars you would hear about at a local level were the Sierra Sapphires, the escort Cosworths, and the RS Turbos. Older lads would talk about these cars as if they were celebrities. You would see these cars on TV in rally programs, and if you were lucky, you would spot one in the wild. I got fortunate at the age of ten, melted to the back seat of a snow-white Sierra Cosworth with Five spoke Compomotives and a Blue Cosworth Cam cover, with that unmistakable rear wing., three details forever burned into my skull.
My first taste of speed and tuning culture, the sound of that turbo, the noise of the throaty exhaust, I loved every second of that spin, and blame that brief encounter with a Cosworth for assisting in the corruption of my younger self. I’ll always have a soft spot for a proper fast Ford; I hope you enjoy these photos Flip took whilst we shot our last video from a Pre Covid gathering of some of the best Euro Fords Ireland has to offer.
