Photos Unboxed: Make The Pockets Great Again
I love how much the 86 pocket joke has grown. These are questionable design flaw on the 86. The area is prone to moisture, and the only real purpose the pocket serves is to help keep the bumper on. It’s a notorious spot to rust on these cars and people usually gauge the car’s overall health here in Ireland by what pocket condition. A long-standing joke amongst Irish 86 heads, you often see people talk about them when figuring out if its a solid car or not. I love the fact we got it going with the vlogs.
We thought the pockets on this car were in reasonable shape, but sadly both my pockets and the Truenos pockets were fucked, and the joke backfired. Luckily Barry was on the case as usual.
Bryan has gifted us a cleaner pocket for the right side of the shell, but Barry reckoned this side could be saved. He hacked it off and inspected the bottom; turns out there was too much pitting, so he decided to cut the whole bottom piece out and make a fresh one from scratch
After getting the shape to his liking, he tacked it back on for further refinement. Guys like Barry are a dying trade in the car world, and I wish there were more people with these skills for the next generation of enthusiasts. It’s a real shame when you think about it. There aren’t that many people around who can do this type of work.
Barry was also going to tackle a few other spots which were typical for rust while he had the time. This part of the arch eventually rusts out due to stuff getting chucked at it from the road. The same spot on the other side had also rusted out from moisture gathering under the skirts.
This stuff is very satisfying to watch; the magic is in the pockets, so we had to repair them at all costs!
Barry spent a good hour tapping this into the right shape before offering it up for welding. Some more tapping and eventually it looked right.
Once he was happy with the shape, he tacked the pocket back into place, instantly restoring the cars magical capabilities.
This will look great after a cleanup. The pockets were finally mint lad!
