7’s Day Special
It seemed fitting that we drop this feature today with it being the unofficial day to celebrate the Mazda RX-7. By now the 7’s day event in Japan has already taken place, and the internet is being flooded with pictures of everything in attendance.
These days, a lot of FD’s, in Japan especially, are kept far from OEM, aesthetically speaking. PJ has kept his somewhat simple, to the point, nothing overly obnoxious.
Small details such as the sleepy eye pop-up lights, and the color-coded splitter.
Subtle additions, like the RE-Amemiya side steps…
…the Late-spec 1999 tail lights… Or the GT-Wing, made by ORIGIN Labo.
The car sits on a set of genuine rare 18-inch forged-magnesium Abflug Gran Revolfe Prism wheels.
9.5 inches wide and a +35 offset at the front, and 10.5 inches wide in the rear with a +41 offset.
Not exactly known for reliability – The Mazda Rotary engine – However, it has been proven that they can be reliable. There’s an urban legend that Rotaries need to be rebuilt every 60K miles, this is not true.
It all comes down to the level of care taken by the owner. In a lot of cases, people buy a Rotary without any knowledge about them, this isn’t necessarily a problem, because there are those who are willing to learn and gain the knowledge required to maintain a Rotary engine at the level required. The problem lies with those who buy them without any intentions of gaining that knowledge. People buy them; drive them like they would a Honda, for example. They wonder why in three months time they come out to a car that won’t start.
Of course, these people then become another one of those who will be very quick to inform you of how unreliable they are. Don’t get it wrong, we’re not trying to say that the Rotary is incredibly reliable and you will never have issues with one, we’re just pointing out that in a lot of situations, engine failure does come down to the owner, rather than the car itself.
The interior is similar to the exterior, in the sense that everything is kept subtle, and to the point.
As you step in you’re greeted by a pair of matching RECARO Graduation seats, an OMP suede steering wheel and…
…an A’PEXi Power FC Hand Commander which interestingly enough, is housed using a modified Nokia mobile phone hands-free holder.
It’s the little details that truly make us smile!
The FD is a 23 year old car. It’s crazy how long it’s been around, starting production in 1991, but somehow hasn’t aged. It could have easily have been 2001 when production began. It’s a timeless design, visually appealing from the factory floor. Proven chassis, to this day the FD is still heavily used in circuit racing and time attack events all over the world, most noticeably in Japan. You could even say that in the past five years, the use of this chassis and the 13B Rotary has hugely increased from what it was ten years ago. Mazda did everything correct with this final generation of the RX-7.
