Feature: Freshly Squeezed
The owner of this car over thinks, but this is possibly one of his best qualities, the attention to detail in this car is stunning, and only get better. It takes Barry a long time to think about where a sticker should be placed, what colour, if it will stick out too much, clash with other colours on the car, look right and be in the right place. I love this about Barry and his perception of how a car should look. The amount of thought that goes into each part of the car would scare most people but it’s what has helped him to slowly craft one of the best EK9’s in Ireland.
You can judge from his thoughts on stickers just how much though he puts into more important parts of the car. One of the main things about building the right car is the combination of OEM + modified parts, with the way the scene is going and what always stood the test of time is the perfect balance of original parts with a flare from aftermarket goodies which complement the car as a whole. Not just finding whatever and adding it to a car to hope for the best results. The outside of this EK9 will forever be timeless.
This is possibly one of the best looks for the EK9 chassis. The outside has been left to do its thing. As the car is an original Phoenix yellow EK9 this is pretty much as good as it gets on the outside of a Type R. It just proves time and time again how much of a winner Honda were on to when they built the EK9.
As Barry holds it down as a full time college student, funds prove to be quite difficult, but with what cash he has managed to get together it all goes into his Pride and joy. The only thing this Civic needed to compliment the Phoenix yellow was a set of Spoon SW388 wheels wrapped in Toyo T1r’s with Rays extended lug nuts and some smoked indicators. Lurking behind the Spoons is Project Mu brake pads and Mu slotted discs all round. The car also has a set of TE37 shoes wrapped in Toyo R888’s for track use.
The original B16 was swapped out for a much livelier B18c from a 96 spec ITR. Helping this engine along is a 4.9 final drive, Exedy clutch and Fidanza flywheel. Controlling the B18 is a Hondata s300 with launch control mapped by Inspector. These days the Honda scene is flooded with replica parts, which do the job, but it’s always those genuine parts when you smile. This thing is filled with goodies like a spoon strut, spoon HT plug leads, Mugen cold air intake, and a Mishimoto radiator with Mishimoto hoses.
An entire list of very desirable Password JDM extras help to spruce up the engine bay and interior, all genuine Password JDM red washers and bolts, a Password JDM cooling panel, oil cap, solenoid cover and rad stay.
The Password JDM parts continue to say hello the back end of the car. Handling wise the EK9 is further assisted by a Password JDM 4 point rear strut brace and B-C pillar strut brace finished in a satin bronze.
The car itself it the EK9 model which came with no electric Mirrors, no air bags no air con and no electric windows for more of a drivers feel. The inside remains relatively unchanged retaining the classic red Recaros and much of the original design asides from a Password JDM gear Gator a subtle Juicebox sticker and a decent alarm to keep shit heads away.
Barry’s EK9 is going to be another one of those right click save as cars, the one you see on the internet and save straight away. With all the trends which are coming and going, function vs form and all that Jazz this EK9 is the perfect blend of a clean subtle looking Honda civic meets track and street weapon. In ten or fifteen years there will be nothing dated about this look, nothing will look like it was from this period that needs to be removed, it’s a car that has been styled to almost perfection. In this case, less is always more…..
