Event: Mondello Drift Day 15-1-12
Sunday the 15th of January saw another drift practise day at Mondello park. The best thing about these drift days is pretty much any type of contraption can be seen on the track along with skill level.Pretty much anyone with a rear wheel drive car can enjoy an open pit all day and a tyre changing service. With the rising cost of tax, petrol and pretty much everything else in Ireland, we are seeing more and more cars hitting the track never to return to the road again.
This was probably the last thing I would expect to see at a drift day!
The best part about these days is the amount of time out on track makes for some quality entertainment. The top bend was seeing some of the most ridiculous entries ever.
The speed camera was out…
Dan Moorhead was pushing his ps13 easily past the 140k mark,
Wesley Keating was right behind spitting out flames and pushing the car over 140+ mark under the bridge into the top bend. One of the most memorable parts of the day for sure.
The 14 seems to be the most popular choice for sliding in Ireland, followed by the ps13, cars are getting cheaper and cheaper as everyone leaves for the land down under.
Skirt melter!
If you don’t have panels… you cant break them!
Classy!
Nicky had to be the only person who actually drove to the track, drifted his insanely beautiful 16 valve Trueno amongst a sea of s14’s and drove home again with tax and NCT!
I have serious respect for him, its much more awesome to see someone out there in a road car, especially one of the nicest in the country. Sometimes you worry if anything will be left in a few years at the rate things are being killed!
Whoops!
Cloko made for great entertainment in his AE86 coupe, created from an array of mix match panels and assorted tasty wheels the 4a-ge was tested to the limit throughout the day.
The sound from this Levin was amazing, the f20 almost had the note of a 4a-ge.
It must have been intimidating for that 32 driver to look in his rear view!
I guess one of the toughest things to face in drifting is the fact that somewhere down the line you are going to hit something, a shame to see this coupe getting a bad hit but hopefully it can be fixed.
One of the more fresh looking cars inside the paddock.
Teejay getting some in his 32 with Evo front wheels!
ITR wheels make for some incredible fitment!
Speaking of fitment this was the first time I had a chance to see Simo’s new beast, nicely executed, cheap and cheerful. Its amazing how easily achieved this look is yet many people still haven’t cracked it. Props to simon on assembling another tasty looking machine.
Eventually this 180 became a smoke machine from the wrong end!
As the sun was setting the entries just got more and more extreme, you can see Wez is almost 90 degrees at about 150kph. Something I wont be forgetting any time soon!
This KE70 is badass…. that is all.
Its a shame that such a decent day had to end on a shit note.
Take a look at this r32, pretty nice aye? Yes I’m sure many people would agree that this is a very nice 32. I’m still confused as to why someone would want to fuck this car up. If you are genuinely into cars, no matter how much you have had to drink you would still just want to appreciate how nice this car looks.
It was shitty to hear that some of the more well known people in Irish drifting were responsible for pissing all over the car, dancing on it, snapping off wipers and carving the wiper into the bonnet along with some other stuff, even though as I write this this whole situation has been resolved and will be forgotten, it still makes no sense as to why someone who would consider themselves a car enthusiast would do something to one of the coolest looking R32 GTSt’s in Ireland. Aside from the end of day drama it was another fun day watching people get sideways at Mondello. Stay tuned for more updates real soon!
