Car spotting: More like this!
I have to admit, this car is eye catching. The Irish car scene is changing and has been for the last few years, some people will argue that we are years behind the Japanese and the American’s and others will argue against it, because plenty of times cars have popped up around the country that could easily be on par with similar cars around the world. At the end of the day the scene itself will always be filled with mixed emotions on what’s hot and what’s not. What I like about this car is the fact its part of this whole new generation of “JDM” of “OEM” styling. Its like the scene had to get completely crazy with all the insane body kits and coloured interiors, insane ICE installs and 19 inch rims and then someone hit the reset button and it all went back to zero.
The way things have been re-assessed in the scene, the idea of a clean looking car with nice wheels and subtle mod’s is possible one of the best things that could have happened. This subtle but attractive look is something that could never go out of fashion, especially on a Honda. Jamie, the owner has a serious love for the Civic coupe. This EJ8 is his daily driver, his idea was to make a clean coupe, but with a nice set of wheels helped by a pinch of stance.Click this sentence to see what Jamies coupe used to look like. It was just another run of the mill white civic on big white wheels.
The car has been slammed on D2 coilovers with Skunk 2 Racing camber arms. The back has been de-badged and treated to JDM recess plate. The Jap plates look much nicer on the coupes then the long Irish variant. The rear spoiler has been deleted and the rear bumper fitted with a Type R lip. To finish it off some 50/50 back lights and a sizeable amount of camber taking influence from the Japanese and American scene.
Paying Homage to his influences, Jamie made this custom back brake light!
The inside has been fitted with Red Recaros and an armrest from an EK9. Keeping with the type R theme the floor has been treated to Red Type R mats. The Gear gator and gear knob have been fitted from a civic type R also. These interior bits really add to the otherwise dull look of the standard EJ8 cockpit.
Up front the car has been fitted with an EK9 front bumper which Jamie removed the license plate recess removed and an EK9 grill and headlights were swapped for the originals. The wheel choice was a set of 8 x 15 XXR 501’s with re-sprayed purple spokes. These wheels have been getting quite popular in Ireland but they still hold their appeal when done right like we see here.
This civic coupe has some cool personal touches and overall has a nice clean look to it. I have to admit if more people are going to go this route over some of the older methods of cars styling we will be seeing quite a lot more aesthetically pleasing cars built on the cheap. This whole “JDM”/”USDM” trend is starting to take off and when cars like this are rolling on the streets instead of wings west civics that’s always going to be a massive plus. This is just a daily driver for Jamie and even at that its one of the nicer coupes I have seen around. There just isn’t enough nice EG/EK style coupes in this country which is a shame. Jamie’s EJ8 is a great example of a nice looking coupe that takes inspiration from both America and Japan. There would be nothing wrong with people building more cars like this. Stay tuned as this is just a daily driver, Jamie is building a second coupe at the moment which will have a more thorough build inside and out.
