Meet: AE86 meet @ Portlaoise 2010

With the weather being so crazy lately it was nice that on the day this meet was organized, there was a cold winter sun on a nice crisp day. This meet was held in Portlaoise. They had set up a Gymkhana course where you could have a little fun if you wanted. Its great to see that Ireland still has a strong following of the 86 and other early RWD chassis from Toyota and a decent amount of cars made an appearance.

As we drove in the gate, the first car that caught my attention was this Levin, I have to admit this is one of the nicest in the country. It just looks mean.

The Meisters suit this car to the ground with the black bumpers and the rear Jubride spoiler. Hopefully we can feature this car soon.

I always wondered what this would look like and someone finally did it…. That has to be the smallest plate ever!!

This was hitting the spot, Cork cars have a strange bond with the Meister!

Here was another tasty Trueno wearing some Meister’s. Such a tasty wheel that can never look bad it seems.

Always love this car, its so clean and simple but packing proper parts in a subtle way.

Another car that’s always nice to see is this Levin sporting some matt black Compomotive ML’s.

This is another one of those Levins that just looks proper. The equip 01’s could never get old to look.

At the opposite end of the spectrum was this humble looking mk1 KP starlet.

The rough and ready Ebisu looking 86 that was ripping up the straight on Mondello in the last video we had on the site was lurking out the back.

Across from it was an unusual find at an 86 meet but still worth the snap. An R34 with some funky Enkei NT03’s.

There was plenty of examples of the UK style coupe.

This Levin was all on its own, being attacked by some mid winter low Irish sunlight. The Watanabes always look so timeless under the arches.

This just looked good.

Cant argue with standard! A total contrast to the one above!

That line looks a little on the high side… nonetheless a very clean example of 86

Its rare to see this these days, as you have the UK look on one side and the Japanese look on the other. Some pizza cutters on this standard zenki Levin is an unusual find.

Hmmmm? 9200 rpm? Unless he has the Denso clock or an ecu or something similar Id imagine there isn’t any “At 9200rpm No One Can Hear PLZ”.

This 2door looks aggressive, the green mesh works with the silver lip. Those back wheels looked a little shy for such a mean looker, some spacers and this would be perfect.

A very rare car on our shores was this clean looking Te71 lift back, the predecessor to the beloved AE86.

A few charmants also made an appearance, but this one was had a little surprise.

Yes that is a set of Tosco’s under the arches! How very weird for a Charmant. Such an awesome wheel.
.

Speaking of wheel’s, this KP was enjoying some Hoshino Impul G4’s.

Simo used to have a set of these under his blue KP, you might remember and they seem to suit these cars perfectly. This little example was very nice indeed because it hadn’t been stripped of Japanese look!

Another one of the green KP just because the sun was so low and made for some epic lighting!

A MK1 kp front catching the winter sunlight.

This Levin is such an awesome car, its so subtle and simple on the outside….

And then under the bonnet we see an engine bay style usually reserved for Volkswagen or the Honda scene. A 20valve with Toda cams and Toda pistons complimented by a nice clean Wire tuck. Loving the Levin cooling panel.

A cool looking 2door covered in Ireland’s finest weather! Its almost impossible to keep a car clean this time of year.

It must have been nice to have an AE86 back out to play again after a long gap. Mean looking meister’s up front while the sun attacks the car from the side!

The Gymkhana track looked like good fun.

Ive always like this car, the yellow is an unusual choice. It seems that this 2 door Levin manages to pull the colour off perfectly. Making the colour work even better are those mean looking SSR MK1’s and that Zenki grill. Such a cool car.

Another winning combination is these aggressive Watanabes in gold with a polished lip and that silver over graphite paint job.

Its always nice to see some KE/AE 70’s making an appearance.

The MK2’s really do look perfect under the arches of this corolla. The Japanese styling on these makes was so much nicer. Its rare to see any example’s these days. It must be a nice feeling owning a nice looking Japanese version.

Cloko’s AE70 could probably never look bad. What an awesome car.

The Gymkhana course was getting plenty of usage from people, but then the camera died, so apologies if we didn’t get your car up here. It was great to see people make the effort and show up.  . Its always nice to see that much nostalgic Jap metal in the one place and to see that much love for the Ae86 and similar chassis from that era. Hopefully there will more of this as the location in Portlaoise was perfect. Good Job to the organizers, it seemed to go down perfectly. Till next time….

how are you to know if the car revs to 9200rpm? just because it doesnt have a kit and massive wheels doesnt mean it has a standard engine. or a 16v for that matter!!

    @ Poddy
But the shitty sham sticker on the back window says it revs to 9200 so it must do it

  • billy says:

lads that sticker on the backwindow is pure shite, what does it even mean. i doubt this thing should and would even be doing 9200rpm since they came as 7400 rpm. Does anyone have the spec of the engine in this cam or what type of ecu its running so we can clear this up?

  • Poddy says:

20v blacktop, toda exhaust manifold. few other bits. rolling road print out says 166.7bhp at 9180rpm.

    over-reacted tbh. just laughing now.
