Car Feature: EF-ing clean.
It’s a nice feeling to know you have genuine interest Japanese cars. Just as we were starting to shoot this EF9 a couple of important looking suits came out started gawking in the drain next to this car. It made me laugh, they paid no attention to the car whatsoever, and it didn’t even faze them. A pretty funny moment and a small epiphany about how much of a different view someone can have on a certain inanimate object as opposed to the next man.
The first time I got a chance to see this car was at a Honda meet in Waterford. I was taken back for a second as it stood out of the crowd of the usual Honda’s, the car had a large personality, which is difficult sometimes.
You might think this car looks standard apart from some wheels and a cage, but it’s the little touches that really help this little stunner stand out from the crowd.
At first glance, you instantly realize how clean it is for such an old Honda. The paint looks fresh and all the original stickers look brand new. I love the original pinstripe on these cars, and Ross has taken advantage of that by adding red-faced XXR 501 wheels. The J’s racing lip really works wonders without taking from the somewhat modest look of this civics exterior.
Ross realized earlier on that he didn’t want to mess with quite possibly the best paint scheme to ever come out of Honda A couple of stickers on the exterior is all Ross wanted to do and remove the rear wiper. A nice touch was a set of Red Honda badges to flow with the red accents.
Its great to see that Ross enjoyed the original interior, In my opinion there is nothing worse then seeing an old car like this with some crazy modern Recaro’s from an EK9. The original seats look perfect inside and Ross decided to keep the cockpit period correct. For steering he decided on a Momo steering wheel and a Dc sport short shifter and knob for shifting.
For sound a set of Clarion speakers all round and a Sony head unit do the trick. Nothing has been stripped out; most original parts have been left and merely worked around as we see by the half cage in the rear.
Ross has added a chrome C pillar bar also for extra stiffness at the rear. The interior is mint for a 20 year old the interior and paintwork is so original it even retains the Autobacs service stickers. In Japan its quite common to gut these as so it was pretty refreshing to see all the original carpets and trim.
Ross has kept the colourway going on the Rocker cover with the red added a custom design on the spark plug cover with some 24k gold flake. These little touches really bring out the cars personality.
For induction Ross has added a BCM air in take modified to work with standard air box and a HKS panel filter. An SRS 4-2-1 stainless manifold has been added, NGK spark plugs and silicone leads, and a Skunk2 de-cat and cat back system exhaust.
An Apexi ECV has been added to keep noise down and a Top Fuel ecu has been added to remove the speed limiter, the car now rev’s out to 9500rpm. Ross has added a Voltage stabilizer and earthing kit and a Buddy club Radiator cap to finish it off. I really is great to see that instead of removing parts, Ross has tried to work with and re-fine Honda’s original EF-9.
For handling Ross has added some K-sport coilovers, a Front and rear camber kit with upper and lower front strut brace’s on the front and rear. This all touches the road through XXR 501’s on some stretched Yokohama Advan’s 195/50 tires.
Easily one of the cleanest and finest example’s of an EF-9 in the country its great to see someone work with the cars original design and still create a personality. Such a great little car.
