Feature: Balance

Its hard sometimes to define a good car. What makes a good car, everyone will have a different opinion on this? The same could be asked about the above..What makes a good Honda? The above civic is almost as close as you could get. It doesn’t need to have the most horsepower nor does it have the rarest components, the most insane engine, or the best suspension setup…

Many times people get lost in the race to get the wow factor with their car in some form or another, this can lead to some amazing places but we tend to get obsessive over a specific feature of a car. The 90’s Honda line up has been prone to this on more than one occasion. We often tend to forget just how good of a chassis the EG is, as a drivers car.  The civic has been through the wars, every trend, every sort of modification trend imaginable.

We forget just how playful and fun these are with very minimal modifications. We can get stuck on a track chasing the perfect stance, the fastest drag times, sometimes sacrificing the other great characteristics of these little cars.  All of this has its place, but what really makes a good Honda civic? Sometimes it really come down to the lack of over complications. Form always follows function and I do feel that the track style can never go out of style.

A car that has been so badly tarnished over the years that we often forget, we forget how damn good these are, how impressive it is that Honda released these with double wishbone suspension, for a cheap compact car, most things of the time were solid axle on the rear like the starlet or similar. Sometimes the lack of activity in the rear end looks great, especially in a little Honda.

With modest modifications to an EG6 you basically have one of the most playful thrilling handling fwd warriors the world has ever seen. This example has been built with that idea in mind, a very playful simple car. With very tasteful modifications that transcend what any current fads. This car wouldnt look out of place at a circuit in Japan or on the streets of Osaka.

Take a second to enjoy this car. To really appreciate this civic. Step away from the idea of stancing it, flushing the engine bay, wire tucking it, building this car to go in a straight line, very common things that both have their place in the scene and have brought us some amazing cars over the years, usually built from bone stock poverty models. Take a second to appreciate that this Sir Civic embodies the true spirit of the chassis.

Honda without a doubt engineered some of the best four cylinder engines the world has ever seen, when they paired the B16A with the EG6, out of the box this was one of the best hot hatches the world had never seen… Sadly this model was reserved like many cars for the Japanese market.

There is something so addictive about the civic, the sound of the B – series, the simplicity complimented by the extremely modest exterior. That infectious engagement at 5500rpm… 160hp in an FWD chassis from factory…

dveg8

We tend to overlook balance, a well balanced playful car that you can trust in a corner, a simple car, a car that’s not going to break your hear or try kill you. This thing is begging for a hard drive late at night. That black interior, I love the fact Honda created the black dash.. Amazing how a colour can make something timeless.

I find myself staring at just how less is more, no trends no gimmicks, this is everything an EG civic should be. A good manifold to let the car breath, J’s racing induction slug, some good coils a rad and some front end stiffening is more than enough under the hood to keep it lively The B series itself is a pretty nice image for the eyes.

dveg12

To compliment such a timeless look the car at the time was wearing a classic set of bronze Te37s. The civic is a masterpiece in it own right, I probably wouldn’t do much more to this car, all id do is drive it and enjoy it. This build doesn’t take too much from the original idea of the EG6, its perfect.

Over the years the want and love for the EG has grown… watching that look on someones face with a big horsepower car drop as the humble little civic screams past with that infectious note has brought more than enough smiles. Take a look at many of the Best Motoring Videos where Tsuchiya San has proven if you get the setup right these cars are unstoppable fun. This example is by far one of the best I have ever come across.

There is a reason world over these are still being used as time attack cars. The ultimate underdog on a race track, taking down all many of the RWD turbo big guns. Japan got it spot on with the EG6 SIR  and I’m glad examples like this are around to remind us just how good it is.
