Feature: Without the hole…

There is a new breed of car enthusiasts, some of you may be reading this and laughing while others might agree, as Ireland experiences some sort of melt down, which we won’t go on about, a new collection of enthusiasts who are armed with the websites, blogs, and forums are starting to come up through the ranks pretty quickly. The Polo has always been a car which has mostly taken a back seat to the rest of the Volkswagen family, most of the time when these were “modified”… well you can probably picture what it would have looked like…..

The newer generation, who are having their turn at building cars really have no excuses, one Google image search and you are bombarded with thousands of images of what your potential build could somewhat become, the thing about the MK4 polo is that it doesn’t really have that saturated content online, it really is a chassis which aside from the when the Max Power scene had a go, doesn’t have a monstrous following. I’ve always wondered what if the Americans or the Japanese had their chance to play with the Mk4, what would come of it. (Yes I know the Europeans have it and there are a few nice examples but…)

Because of the rare sunny day, and the location, one could easily say that this photo-shoot is anywhere… that’s because the execution of this Polo is simply flawless. Emmett, the owner of this Mk4 is part of the new breed, as corny as that may sound its true. I’ve watched this car grow from a just another daily Polo, because Ireland is flooded with them, to an all-out trophy winner. The world is so saturated right now with stance, style and instructions on how to do things right that one can easily be overwhelmed, I’m sure Emmett has been lost in a weird corner of the web like many of us, wondering what to do, what would look good/bad etc….

The fact that you are almost on your own with the Polo is what I admire the most. The fact that the scene is spreading out once again, before it was all about looks without performance, and then collapsed, after this the opposite happened, it was all about go…. With the scene being in its prime in an almost grey area, styling a car is just as impressive as a decent engine/power build and vice versa. Emmett had the car re-sprayed in Audi Ibis white. The bumpers were replaced with the 16valve variant both front and rear.

The wheel choice goes hand in hand with pretty much any Volkswagen. To contrast against the fresh white exterior is a set of BBS RM wheels, 15 x 8j at the rear and 15 x 7j up front, the baskets are powder coated candy purple contrasting a polished lip with the addition of Golden bolts. It’s all in the details….

The interior of the car has been kept very subtle, a very mature selection of parts which complement cockpit. With the growing mass of internet car culture, it’s very easy to jump on the bandwagon and attack your car with the latest trend to spread across the web; we have seen it time and time again. Sifting through the chaos to select the right modifications which don’t fade with time is something Emmett has nailed.

A leather interior was sourced from an Ibiza Cupra, a subtle install for the Air system was fitted to the dash and the roof and seats were died black whilst the Pillars have been wrapped with carbon. The original wheel was swapped out for a 280mm Momo team wheel which fits nicely with the small character of the Polo. One look inside and nothing looks out of place, the careful selection looks right.

The Polo sits properly on a Rayvern Air ride system with firestone bags, Rayvern struts and a Firestone compressor. Eibach camber bolts have been fitted up front with camber shims in the rear. The car is the complete opposite of what would have been considered right almost ten years ago in this country, it’s a mint Polo, without being a hole, in fact this MK4 oozes goodness and is yet remarkably simple.

Whilst shooting Emmett’s Polo, people would stop and ask questions and inquire about the car… transforming a Polo from a daily Tesco and back machine into something that can stop people in their tracks is not as easy as it may seem.

This is a Polo, and one of the best examples I have ever seen. For the South East of Ireland it’s a nice stepping stone for many of the younger generation drivers to look at and hopefully take some inspiration with their first or second car. Emmett channelled the internet lurking into an almost perfect execution and is already winning awards. I can’t wait to see what he does with this canvas next….
