Feature: Black Eyed Five

In Ireland, a country heavily influenced by Rallying, many of the Impreza and Lancer evolutions which have been roaming the streets since the days of been brought in from Japan have had a very reserved following. Quite a lot of the owners usually theme the cars loosely on a rally style or keep the cars very subtle and almost stock exterior when it comes to exterior modifications.

I’ve always enjoyed the fact that Mitsubishi took the original lancer and decided to add a bunch of steroid parts and called it the Evolution. The cars themselves have always looked badass from factory and in this case rob has retained the original body styling from Mitsubishi.

The cars were always intended for the rally world as the first Evolution was designed with this in mind from day one, but these cars have always looked much more badass on the street. With the trade mark badges and names the cars progressively got more aggressive looking as time went on with trade mark signatures like the iconic rear spoiler.

This street inspired silver example wears a set of bronze 17 x 8.5 front and 17x 9.5 Volk SE37k’s which push the car aside from the more of the usual White on white EVO 5’s which roam the Irish countryside. The exterior has received a carbon fibre bonnet and the cold air feed comes through a modified Black Cibie headlight giving a nice feed of air to an Apexi intake pipe with a 4″ K&N filter.

Under the bonnet is where things get interesting. You can instantly see the Red Piper Pulleys which are attached to Piper cams. Other things to note are the Tomei conrods, Ross racing Pistons, 800cc injectors, ACL bearings and ARP head bolts. It’s all about the rare genuine Japanese parts on this car that add up to such a nice example of a CP9A.

The Mines cooling Panel or The Kansai service strut brace, or the combination of carbon surrounding a TBO Cat back exhaust.

It’s common knowledge that these cars came equipped with Recaro seats which have retained, other things to note inside would be the Ralliart Mats. Gear gator, peddles and footrest.

The dash was swapped out for a Cm5a GSR Dash with upper glove box. Defi oil, boost, and exhaust temp gauges sit in an Evo dash pod. Underneath lurks an Apexi AVCR boost controller and Power FC with a handheld commander mapped by Apexi’s very own Immamura San.

Lurking behind the Brembos are Endless pads and Endless braided brake lines, the car has been equipped with the cm5a GSR gearbox for a higher top speed and Tein Monoflex coilovers. Other handling extras include Whiteline anti roll bars, uprated bushes, a Cusco rear strut and Cusco flitch braces.

For a fan of the Japanese car scene, this should hit the spot, combining OEM with rare goodies, very similar to the way the Honda guys build a car or the Volkswagen scene in terms of styling, underneath the skin it packs a serious punch with enough handling and power characteristics to be an absolute animal on the street or track, the perfect balance of modifications. It’s exactly what an Evolution 5 should be.
