Garage Life: The little Hachi that could…

This Hachiroku was undoubtedly one of the most well known in this country. The car just had that vibe which made it stand out. It looked so fresh for its age. Being 27 years old the car didnt look one year of it. With its fresh coat of metallic red over black and some shiny work equips with some insane dish on the rear, this car oozed everything an ae86 should carry.

I had watched this car from the day it was bought, when it was blue and a little rough looking. This car was supposed to be just temporary for Dayo, a car he would spray and sell on to fund an even bigger project. But as the story goes with the Hachirouku, there so humble and simple, and when there working, nothing can be as fun to play in. A little 1600 4AGZE roaring for its life under the hood of such a square but perfect looking little coupe. This car was nicknamed the pig because it was basically a pig to drive. So many little thing which you had to know about this car when driving it, the way it handled, the way it started, the way it idled. All these little imperfections which made the car almost human like.

When a car shows its flaws like this, it becomes human like and these little things grow on you, they give the car a personality. Its amazing, because not everyone can enjoy this kind of a love for a car. Most people in this world would consider this car to be scrap, they would prefer a nice new air conditioned Golf or an Astra or whatever to get from A to B in comfort.

Its truly is great to see someone who has a true love for a machine. Dayo was the perfect example, after falling in love with this car it was stripped and resprayed, the car saw two new bride seats, wheels and engine parts. Paycheck after Paycheck went into this car and it showed on every inch. This car got Dayo quite alot of attention as it just looked so fresh for such an old car. This car was also the reason why Dayo has received so much work in his garage. The car was a true testament to his skill in both spraying the building of a car.

Its no secret that life is random. Anything can happen at anytime. Even though this car was clean and shiny, it was used just like any hachi should be. Just like any other night of drifitng fun, it was late, and we decided to go for one more run. There was a truck parked at the side of the road so using the full road would certainly result in clipping the truck. As the rain started to pour down, we said fuck it, and decided to go for it.

As we were just about to hit the second clipping point between the two bends in the port road, there was a nice bit of camber which leans towards some poles. The water running across the road and as the car was sliding the front wheels broke loose. As Dayo tried to correct the car there was really nothing he could do once it hit the grass. Luckily he corrected the car in a way so it hit the rear instead of the side or front.

Both of us hit the pole at a decent speed but no serious injuries were suffered. Just some nice headaches and stiff bodies. Lucky stuff I guess. Not everyone can walk away from a crash and I guess its better that it was the car and not us. I really feel for the car and for Dayo as he genuinely loved the shit out of this car. When we brought it back and assessed the damage it was clear that this would be no quick fix. Its like losing a friend or something when this happens to a car. Nobody likes to see this shit happen. Especially to a car like this. It could have been worse and for now the car will be put to the side. Someday over the next year, the cover will be pulled off the car and a new project will begin. The drive will be that true love for the little hachiroku that could. As the car had recieved so much attention over the past few years we decided to put up this little article and video to send it off.
