The Tullow drag strip. - Juiceboxforyou

The Tullow drag strip.

So I got a call about this Legal drag strip type thing that was going down in Tullow just outside of Carlow. I was instantly curious to see what exactly or how this could work. We jumped in the van and Magoo and Ann drove ahead in the Primera. It was some laugh finding the place but eventually we rang the guys from Caseys Yard and they came down in the trusty ex Eircom Transit at top speed and they lead the way. I was still wondering how on earth you could have a drag strip around the country side. We were on back roads laughing and wondering if the roads would just be closed off or what. Eventually I gave up guessing of ways in which they could have a drag track in the middle of nowhere and decided to wait till we got a look. As we were tearing along a nice country road the road suddenly turned into wide open concrete. It was crazy, no fences on the fields and a couple of houses at the start. Then the road opened into a massive field with this little concrete road in between. We then came to a digger which was blocking the road. Everything felt very mad max about the situation but it was cool. They were looking for a fiver to go up and check it out so I was down for supporting. The digger bucket lifted which was basically there as a gate and we headed on up to the sheds in the distance. It really looked like something from the America. I’m easily amused I guess.

The smell from this shed was amazing, dried human shit. It definitely adds character to the place haha. Everything started to make sense. The yard is pretty famous for drifting around the area and many drift days seem to go down with good turnouts. I then realized the road coming out of the yard to the bottom of the filed was the drag strip. There was already a few heads there testing it out. This was basically a trial run day to see if starting something would actually be worthwhile.

I couldn’t resist an oul snap of this Delicious ek9 rocking Racing heart cp35s against the wall.

The track is sloped and starts from concrete but one side hits tar and the other remains on the concrete. At first people were sketched about the space to slow down but it seemed ok after a few runs. The guys at the Yard are saying that if this gets popular the strip will be tarred fully. The guys running it were confident enough about anything running and having enough space to slowdown. An enjoyable question someone said was why the track didn’t go the other direction……

I guess this wall explains it. If worst came to worst in the other direction at least there was a gigantic field to stop in which wouldnt do half as much damage as a nice wall.

Big and little brother civcs. Some clean cars showed up to play for the day. It was a good time.

Don’t you just love when your rocking the same hoodies.. hahaha

After watching for abit Killian decided to get in on some. 30 bucks and you could race all day.

If people take to this it can work so well. There’s no fuss from cops and no shit. Just pay the money and race whatever car you want.

Its definitely a site seeing two eg’s shoot off down an open road into a field. You cant really get more Irish, but its cool.

This idea has a serious amount of potential for people into straight up drag racing. Everyone who showed up enjoyed the setup. The hay separatd the strip from the parked cars and onlookers so it was safe.  The yard is big enough to have a decent day with some sort of knockout tournament or any kind of drag race event. A few more people showed up to give the strip a shot. The feedback was cool. It seemed that after a few runs people were enjoying it. With anything new at first everyone is a bit resistant, but after a while people were pushing more and more and getting more relaxed with the surface and the length.

The right side looked a little choppy but it didn’t seem to slow people down too much and only seemed to look worse then it was.

This door was a serious winner door. What I would pay to see someone walk out.

Same setup as on the street. No lights for now  just the good old 3… 2…. 1… GO!!  haha. Definitely a cool cop free way of doing a normal night anywhere else.

The drag strip is definitely a cool idea for someone who just wants to have some fun and race. For the 30 bucks it seemed a little steep at first but the guys at the yard were telling us they needed to cover the cost of the day. The official first day has happened and we couldn’t make it, Were definitely going to try and make it up to another. The first test day went pretty well. You can argue that its pointless because there is no timing system. But for now it seems that for just straight drag racing with no fuss from the police or from other stupid shit this place is spot on without the hassle of driving north. Driving to Enniskillen and Bishops courts is cool and that but sometimes having something a bit more local is better. Tullow isint too far for many people in the south so its easy enough on fuel and funds. Its not a perfect drag strip like something out of the states with Christmas trees and stuff, but its a start and its something. I really think that this is a cool idea and if people are positive towards this it can only get better and more structured in time.
